Derek Harvey Biography

Colonel (Ret.) Derek Harvey is a well-known national security consultant, commentator and creative mind with a reputation for insightful analysis on U.S. political issues and trends, and foreign political, economic and security issues.  Recognized as a brilliant geopolitical strategist and an exceptional analyst, Derek most recently served as the Senior Advisor, Chief of Analysis and Director for Investigations for Chairman Devin Nunes, House Permanent Select Committee for Intelligence (HPSCI).

Derek’s responsibilities included briefing the Republican Caucus on worldwide intelligence developments, conducting oversight, leading investigations of intelligence community politicization, CIA, FBI and DOJ abuse and corruption related to the “Russia Hoax” and violations of civil liberties.   He has deep knowledge about intelligence; particularly the activities, challenges, and reforms needed in the CIA, FBI and DOJ.  Derek led multiple investigations into Chinese influence operations, espionage and criminal activities threatening America’s economic well-being and security while also writing the House Committee reports on Covid-19, Chinese military/high tech developments, and efforts to co-opt the U.S. financial sector.   He led HPSCI’s investigation and professional staff support in the defense of President Trump during impeachment battles.

Previously Derek was the Special Assistant to President Trump and Senior Director for the Middle East and North Africa on the National Security Council.  He worked closely with President Trump and Jared Kushner to craft and execute policy to advance Middle East Peace, the recognition of Jerusalem as the Israeli Capital, and the withdrawal from the Iran Nuclear Deal.  Colonel Harvey is an experienced National Security and Middle East specialist whose expertise is sought by corporations, banks, venture capital firms and the U.S. government for insights and advice on risk, policy formulation, strategic planning, designing analytical studies and conducting net assessments.

Derek insights are informed by unique experiences and expertise earned as a senior intelligence executive, infantry commander, intelligence officer and academic.  He has a broad range of expertise working inter-agency policy formulation and knowledge about intelligence, national security, defense issues, terrorism, insurgency, military doctrine, operations and strategy.  He is regularly called upon to consult in the business and banking arena on a range of complex geopolitical issues such as China, Ukraine, Russia, and Central Asian issues.

Prior to returning to government, Derek was a professor at the University of South Florida where he led the Global Initiative on Civil Society and Conflict where he focused on developing knowledge and insights in a socio-economic-cultural-political context to inform smarter decision making.  Derek has been an adjunct professor for the University of Maryland, Central Texas College, and a Fellow at Carnegie Mellon University.

He was a regular contributor to the PBS News Hour, and has appeared on CNN, FOX News, Newsmax, Al Jazeera America, National Public Radio, the BBC, French 24 and other outlets. He has contributed to the Wall Street Journal and other periodicals.
